About the Organization

The mission of the Fort St. John Curling Club is to promote and develop the sport of Curling throughout the North Peace region, and provide the infrastructure, knowledge, services, and opportunities for our volunteers, players, and coaches to enjoy the game. For over 75 years, we have been at the heart of the North Peace region. Whether by developing local athletes to national and international acclaim, or by creating moments of enjoyment between friends, family, and co-workers, we promote and celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of our neighbours and fellow community members.

Since 1979, our facility has been home to hundreds of events that have brought our community together. With countless weddings and celebrations occurring alongside an ever-growing recreation and wellness offering, we host the events and functions that participants will remember fondly for a lifetime. Moving forward, we aim to take a leadership role in developing a network of programs, activities, services, and events that will inspire community members to participate in a range of experiences that foster a strong and vibrant community spirit across the North Peace region.

Job Description

Reporting to a nine (9) member board, the Executive Director (ED) holds overall responsibility for both the FSJ Curling Club and facility operations and organizational performance. The ED is responsible for financial performance and viability, budgeting and financial management; external relations; strategic planning; organizational development; board relations and governance; and staff leadership, management, and development.

The organization currently forecasts around $300 000 in revenue for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. The new ED will oversee the work of one (1) ice technician, and numerous bar and catering staff. Some work on evenings and weekends will be required.

Areas of Focus for the New Executive Director

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve the visibility and use of the facility spaces for recreation and event functions

  • Develop and expand the membership of the FSJ Curling Club, and promote and develop opportunities to experience the sport throughout the North Peace region

  • Work with stakeholders to rebuild a post-COVID calendar of events that honours and grows flagship experiences

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy designed to diversify and increase unrestricted funding sources, leading to a sustainable balance of earned and contributed income

  • In partnership with board leadership, identify and recruit prospective board members who add skills, experience, and perspective, diversify the existing group of board members, and are eager and enthusiastic about stewarding the organizations’ vision


Organization Mission and Strategy

  • Works with board, staff, and volunteers to ensure the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach

  • Ensures that services and funding relationships are robust enough to meet or exceed goals and objectives

  • Analyzes and optimizes business strategy to ensure that the facility and the club can successfully fulfil its mission into the future


  • Oversees all daily operations of the business

  • Plans, organizes, and implements the operations and programs of both the facility and the club

  • Manages finances, including budgeting, and approval account spending

  • Coordinates and leads annual budget reviews, monthly and quarterly reviews, and periodic forecast updates with members of the Board

  • Develops fundraising to support the facility and the club

  • Manages all administrative tasks such as insurance, booking schedules, and invoicing

Venue Management

  • Manages all bookings for events and liaises with the clients to determine event requirements

  • Prepares venue hire packages and pricing options and negotiates with clients

  • Manages all maintenance and repairs of the venue grounds, property, equipment, and facilities

  • Ensures that the venue and facilities are clean and organized

  • Liaises with catering services and supervises their requirements and logistics

  • Communicates and enforces all health and security regulations and protocols

Staff Leadership

  • Leads staff, from the hiring and firing of employees and volunteers to creating a strong organizational culture

  • Retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and volunteers by providing career coaching, growth, and personal development for workers

External Relations

  • Serves as the organization’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s membership, the media, and the general public

  • Develops relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, partner organizations, and governing bodies

  • Promotes facility and club services and experiences through a variety of marketing channels

Relationship with the Board of Directors

  • Works with the Board to fulfill the organization’s mission

  • Leads the organization in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors

  • Communicates effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions


  • Post-secondary education in Business Administration, Marketing, Recreation, Hospitality, Event Planning, or a related field preferred

  • 2+ years experience in a management position of an organization, division, or department in Recreation, Hospitality, or a related field

  • Passionate about providing a variety of recreation, sport, and social opportunities to a diverse community

  • Able to hold and articulate a bold vision for our community and create paths to realize it

  • Model and champion a culture grounded in fairness, integrity, responsibility, and respect devoted to the practices that further diversity, racial and cultural equity, and inclusion

  • A strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing northern, rural communities

  • Excellent promotional ability and knowledge of marketing channels and techniques

  • Great interpersonal and communication abilities

  • Able to exercise independent initiative and judgment

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills

  • Must successfully clear a Police Information Check

  • Strong negotiation skills and leadership abilities
