The Fort St. John Curling Club is excited to announce a newly formed partnership between the society and the Fort St. John Soccer Club.
Over the previous years, general interest in curling has declined. Curling has struggled to attract new people to the sport, and while we are optimistic that can change in the future we also understand that curling alone, is not a feasible option to keep the club running. Because of this we have looked to our community to find a partnership that would not only help to keep the Club running, but also to benefit a local club who is in need of a space that better accommodated their needs.
The Fort St. John Curling Club and the Fort St. John Soccer Club have agreed to a 5-year partnership and are currently in the midst of negotiating terms for the lease. This partnership will result in the Curling Club downsizing to 4 sheets of Ice from 8, and the Soccer Club will take the north half of the pad for youth soccer. We will be erecting a wall in the center of the pad to separate the space for both parties. There will be multiple man doors as well as a larger door to accommodate the use of the pad for events like the RV Show in the off season.
We hope that we can build our membership base up enough that one day we may go back to a full 8 sheets of ice, but until then we are happy to share our space with the Fort St. John Soccer Club. For those of you that are concerned about curling draw times and how curling will look with a downsized space, we are working tirelessly to come up with options to avoid later than necessary times and to ensure everyone has the same opportunity to curl.
In the light of COVID-19 the Curling Club has transitioned to an online registration system to allow for less traffic flow in the building before the season starts. Those in need of assistance with the registration system, please call our General Manager Emily Furlot at 250-224-6242 or email our Curling Manager Jeff Holland at email@example.com. Additionally, the Club is putting every measure in place to ensure the health and safety of our members, this is our top priority for the 2020/2021 curling season. As Dr. Bonnie Henry has said, “Be kind. Be calm. Be safe”, social distancing will still be an important part of the upcoming curling season.
With the construction of the wall in the center of the pad, we are pushing back our “ice-in” date from October 1st to October 15th. We look forward to seeing all of our curlers once again, as well as the new faces with Fort St. John Soccer Club.
